Ghost Ship
Something tells me you're new to Bearings... Welcome! Please subscribe to the RSS feed to continue your journey!
This is my first "real" attempt at large format photography. You probably recognize this as the SS Red Oak Victory, built in Kaiser’s Richmond Shipyard during World War II. Today it’s a museum.
Technique: Painted with a spotlight for 180 seconds/F8.0 on Ilford Delta 100. Developed in my bathroom using D-76 stock in a uniroller; water as stop bath; Ilford Rapid Fixer; and two rinses to finish it off. Scanned on the Epson 4990 Photo.
Some shipyard workers were looking at me strangely while I was doing this.

Nice job!
Do you use the D-76 full-strength in the Uniroller? Inquiring minds need to know; I recently picked up a Unidrum and roller but haven't used it yet...

Seen in my contacts' photos.

These are the times I've found to work well at 68 degrees F:
200ml D-76 (Full Strength): 4 minutes, continuous agitation
Water Stop Bath: 1 minute, continuous Agitation
Ilford Rapid Fixer (1:4 Mix): 5 minutes
Water Rinse: 2 minutes each.
Seems to work well. THe first time, I had trouble with the negatives sticking together (I placed four 4x5 sheets in a single drum). Then, I decided to add a plastic clip spacer from a clothes hanger that I purchased at Target and it worked splendidly. The plastic is nice because it doesn't corrode and there are no metal springs/components on the clips I found.
I re-use the fixer about three times before dumping it, and keep unused chemicals in 200ml ready-to-use bottles. My room temp is about 70 F, so I don't even need to worry about warming or cooling the stock.

Oh, and I tried a pre-rinse the first time, but that definitely led to uneven development, so I don't really recommend the pre-rinse.

That's a nice exposure. It's fun to watch you working on this.

Marvelous! I'm impressed with this wonderful shot of the Red Oak Victory... did you shine the light from where the camera stood? That's rather a long way!

Nice...I miss shooting around the waterfront in the bay area.
Here is an old photo of her that I shot years ago.

Very nice shot. I really like the stark contrasts and the way you've brought out the ship in relation to the surroundings.
