Do you wear protection in places like this? I usually don't when outside, or in tunnels with steel dust ... but boiler rooms are CRAZY-full of friable asbestos.

This is 120 roll film. I did shoot a 4x5 sheet of it, but it didn't turn out as focused as I had hoped.

@Pro-Zak: I've consulted with my doc. and he said I should have nothing to worry about, so long as I'm not swimming in the stuff :-). I have purchased a respirator, but I rarely use it if ever because it's cumbersome.

@bebocraze: thanks! :-)

@upshift: thanks x2 :-)

The respirator's not really needed unless you're going somewhere with fumes (or where the dust is so thick that it's overly visible in the air ... but you wouldn't have your lenses out in that anyway!). But a simple dust mask would be a great thing for places like these. Anywhere where there are old pipes with insulation (basements and especially boiler rooms), I pop one on.
I'm really not one to worry too much about hazards while exploring (yeah, I've had a tetanus booster), but after sitting through a 4-hour hazmat training session at work, I have slightly more respect for some things. Fear the chrysotile!

Masonite was pretty cool. I grew up near Ukiah, and was in the plant once when it was still operating and once after almost all the machinery had been removed. (That was at night w/ only cell phones for flashlights, and we got chased out by a guard. They had problems with people stealing copper.) Anyway, I haven't been through Ukiah in a while, but I think almost everything's gone, including most of the buildings.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Industrial Archeology, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

What a mess of beauty!
