The SS Independence will be leaving THIS WEEK for the breaker beaches of India, according to rumors — all despite the fact that Norwegian promised that she would be preserved or put back into service. Please write your local media and tell them that that the LAST American ocean liner (besides the SS United States, which is even less likely to be preserved) is leaving to be broken down. Check out the history set for a full range of images related to its colorful history. This ship should be preserved.
This ship was paid for mostly by TAXPAYERS. The public owns it, and we therefore have a say in its fate.

Great shot ! I didn't notice all the color in here. I have to agree with you on the preservation aspect. I have a real problem with this high disregard for American maritime history. I keep thinking that there has to be some thing that could have been done. I learned about all this too late. I would have made call, and wrote letters for sure. So very sad. `
