Malian Puppeteer

A Malian puppeteer dances to the music of Tabital Pulaku at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2003. Tabital Pulaku plays music of the pastoral Fulani. In such music, the dancers’ feet rarely leave the ground to denote being restrained by the undergrowth.

This photo was taken during my summer internship at National Geographic years ago; it wasn’t published, but I think of it as one of my favorites from the day.
